Rationalist Philosophers -Theories of Rationalism, Substance & God

Rationalism, in Western philosophy, is the view that regards ‘reason’ as the chief source and test of knowledge.

Rationalist Philosophers

René Descartes (1596-1650) was a French philosopher who is often studied as the first great philosopher in the era of “modern philosophy.”

Benedict de Spinoza (1632-77), the Dutch Jewish philosopher  introduced a conception of philosophizing that was new to the Renaissance (renewed interest in something); philosophy became a personal and moral quest for wisdom and the achievement of human perfection.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646 – 1716 CE) was a German philosopher and mathematician who invented calculus at the same time as Newton and we still use his system of notation.

SubstanceGodTheory- Rationalism
DescartesDescartes  advocates “substance dualism,” which states that the mind and the body are two different substances. While the body is material (corporeal), the mind is immaterial (incorporeal). Descartes proves the existence of God in his ontological (nature of being) argument by stating that God’s existence is an idea of a supremely perfect being without contradiction. Descartes stated that God’s existence is self-evident as the most basic mathematical truth. Descartes was the first significant rationalist philosopher of the modern classical period. He rejects sense experience as a trustworthy source of knowledge early in his Meditations.
SpinozaFor Spinoza, there is only one substance which is ‘God or Nature’.(1) there is only one substance; (2) this substance has infinitely many attributes; (3) this substance is God or nature; (4) each of these attributes express the divine essence; and (5) all else is a mode or modifications of the one substance. Spinoza understands a substance to be something that is self-caused and self-explained. Spinoza further believes that metaphysical rationalism entails that at least and at most one substance exists and that this substance necessarily exists and is absolutely infinite, and consequently that this substance is God (according to Spinoza’s definition, God is an absolutely infinite substance) and that all else inheres in this substance – that is, all else is explained by, caused by, and conceived through this substance.Metaphysical rationalism claims that everything has a cause or reason.Spinozistic rationalism defines substances as self-caused, conceived through themselves, and self-explanatory.
LeibnitzA substance is that subject which could have many predicates, but it is not a predicate of any other subject. For Leibnitz, monad is a simple substance which cannot be divided into parts. A compound substance may be formed by an aggregation of monads.God, according to Leibniz, is (i) a necessary being, (ii) the explanation of the universe, and (iii) the infinite intelligence.Leibniz, a Rationalist, believes that the world was rationally created by God, who controls all in the best and most rational of all possible worlds, and so he assumes that each thing can be rationally explained because each thing was rationally created. This is a teleological view (explanation of phemomenon in terms of purpose), what many call today intelligent design.

Hello Madhvi ! Your philosophical concept is up to mark . Rationalist philosophers are required to be not only studied but promoted . Reason is the ultimate parameter of the development of human mind . And the human mind is a complex phenomenon . That can be cracked by reason only . Thanks !

I had been a student of the University of Bombay way back in early eighty at Calina Campus . Read my blog “ARBIND KUMAR BLOG” also .

Hello Arbind Ji!! It is pleasure meeting you here. Glad to know about your journey at Kalina campus, University of Mumbai. I am highly inspired by your blogs and detailed studies on historical topics. It is really helpful. Historical contexts are very important to know our foundation and move towards better future.
Also, It is very true that human mind is complex and so we need a better subject to study it and reflect upon it. Philosophy as a subject is doing its best to achieve the target. Rationality, critical thinking and thought reflections are deeply explored here. Could you please suggest any points where we could find an intersection between philosophy and history? Once again, Thankyou for visiting my blog page. Stay connected!

Thank you Madame Madhvi ! Nice to listen from you . Let me introduce first . I have done M.A (Politics) in 1984 from the University of Bombay ; M.A (History) in 1987 again from the University of Bombay . I have been a (Net-Qualified

Let me continue first because it was published without completion of the facts and correction of the sentences . Anyway , I had been a UGC (NET-Qualified) JRF/SRF in the Department of History , Patna University from 1991-95 . I did my MBA from IGNOU while in Job .Then I qualified in Bihar Public Commission and remained in the Government Job in Bihar . I retired from the Government Job in 2021 . Since then I have been writing on the WordPress , the LinkedIn , Blogger.com , Reddit , Instagram , Facebook (VALMIKI RAMAYAN EP ) , Koo etc.

Now Let me come on your question . If you closely watch ARBIND KUMAR BLOG (available also on Google) , I have written at least five articles/blogs on the Indian Philosophy . Read all of them , if possible . And where History ends Philosophy starts . My Ph.D work is on JAYAPRAKASH NARAYAN and socialist movement in India . So, I have little socialist leniency . Recently I have written a Novel called ‘THE YOGINI : A BRIDE IN NEED’ available on Amazon.in . All about History and culture of the central Bihar .

History is virtually Philosophy in motion . To Napoleon , History is ‘the only true philosophy and only true psychology .’ To Aristotle , ‘history contrasts research into facts , with logical task of explanation .’ I am of the opinion that history provides a wider field for philosophy . But modern research on history must be concentrated on Modern Indian philosophers , especially on Sri Aurovindo and M.N Roy . J. Krishnamurti may also be included .

The horizontal and vertical flight of philosophy are limitless . But for the betterment of our society , it must be studied horizontally . In vertical flight of philosophy , some scientific tenets must be included in it to make is pragmatic and palatable . And history helps in both the approaches of philosophy . Thanks !

Namaste Arbind Ji! You seem to be a highly motivated person. I really appreciate your journey. It takes so much courage to build a dynamic career like you. Many Thanks for responding to my queries. To re-quote, “History is virtually philosophy in motion”, I think it is the perfect idea to connect history with philosophy. I will take this as a lesson to work on my field and contribute to it from a wider perspective. I am glad to inform you that my research work is on contemporary Indian philosophers (like Sri Aurobindo, Acharya Rajneesh, Ananda Coomaraswamy) where I have considered the past and future journey of philosophers to reflect on the trending modern ideas like freedom, free choices. Your words are so deep and meaningful. Once again, Thanks for inspiring me! It’s a request to you to kindly share your working email id. I would be happy to invite you in some future events and conferences. Thankyou!
